Colorado, also known as The Centennial State because it was founded in 1876 – 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, is located in the western region of the United States. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Colorado had at least 536 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. This puts them at a rate of 9.5 deaths per 100,000 persons which is below the national average with a rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 persons during the same time frame.

Research revealed that in 2013, Colorado providers wrote approximately 69.8 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, which works out to be almost 3.7 million prescriptions. Also, in 2013, the rate for the entire United States averaged out to be 79.3 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, which is higher than Colorado’s.

Since then, opioid prescriptions in the United States have declined, with a 6.0 percent decline in Colorado from 2013 to 2015, resulting in an estimated 63.7 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons (3.5 million prescriptions) in 2015.

According to the CDC, MMWR, as of 2014, the incidence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) which is when a mother uses drugs during her pregnancy and the child is born having withdrawals, in Colorado has increased from 0.4 per 1,000 births in 1999 to 2.9 per 1,000 births in 2013, a more than sevenfold increase. The average across the 28 states included in the 2013 analysis was 6.0 per 1,000 births.

In the state of Colorado, recreational marijuana is legal so long as you are an adult 21 years of age or older. You may legally possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, as well as different types of concentrates, edibles and topicals.

Please be aware that your right to possess marijuana in Colorado does not apply when you are visiting national parks, national forests, monuments, or other federal properties such as courthouses. Possession of marijuana on federal land is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000 on the first offense, along with a 15-day mandatory sentence that can be extended to two years in prison for a second offense. After that, perpetrators can receive a 90-day to three-year prison term, and a $5,000 fine.
