In the State of Alaska there were 94 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. This was at a rate of 12.5 deaths per 100,000 persons, compared to the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 persons. The opioid related deaths in the State of Alaska has steadily increased from 8.7 deaths per 100,000 persons in 2010. This increase was mainly driven by an increasing number of heroin-related deaths totaling 49 in 2016.
Alaska employers may test job applicants for any job-related purpose, consistent with business necessity and the terms of the employer’s written policy. An employer may decide not to hire an applicant who refuses to take a pre employment drug test. Alaska employers are allowed, but not required, to drug test employees and applicants for the following job-related purpose that is consistent with business necessity, including:
