About the State of Wyoming

Wyoming, also known as the Equality State, Cowboy State and Big Wyoming, is located in the western region of the United States and is bordered by Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah and Idaho. Wyoming is well known for being a rural State with a population of approximately 500,000 which works out to be 5.8 people per square mile, as Wyoming has roughly 97,818 square miles. An overwhelming majority of the state economy is concentrated into three separate sectors which include agriculture, energy and nature tourism. Not to mention, Wyoming is also a major producer of beef, wool, wind power, coal and uranium. An estimated 6 million visitors travel each year to Wyoming and its parks.

When you think of Wyoming, one of the very first places that pops in your mind is Yellowstone National Park. This is the world’s first and oldest national park, where it is deemed to be one of the most awe-inspiring wilderness areas on the planet. Yellowstone is one of Wyoming’s most sought-out attraction sites where people from all over the world go to visit and see the abundant wildlife, hissing geysers, bubbling mud pots and steaming hot springs. This park is open year-round, however, most of the tourists arrive during the summer to enjoy everything it has to offer.

An interesting fact about Wyoming is that In 2001, a project known as the Free State Project, selected Wyoming as its official state to do political migration. This was a plan set up to have all Libertarians relocate to one state so they could live for free.

State of Wyoming Drug Testing News

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2016, Wyoming had a rate of 8.7 deaths per 100,000 persons, which was lower than the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 persons during the same time. As of 2012, Wyoming had between five and 10 babies per 1,000 births that were born with neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, which is where babies are born having withdrawals from the drugs that their mothers were taking while in utero.

Research revealed that in 2015, Wyoming had an estimated 33,900 cases of acute Hepatitis C (HCV), with over 64 percent of these acute cases attributing to Injection Drug Use, which is when a drug user uses unsanitary needles, passing infected blood to themselves, and in turn developed different diseases such as HCV and HIV.  In 2014, an estimated 269 persons were diagnosed with HIV infection in Wyoming, and out of those 269 persons, approximately 21.4 percent of males and 19.1 percent of females attained HIV through Injection Drug Use. Also in 2015, Wyoming providers wrote 65.3 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, approximately 383,000 prescriptions, which was just below the rate of the national average which was 70 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, in the same time frame.

Marijuana in the State of Wyoming

According to FindLaw, recreational marijuana use and its possession, sale, trafficking and cultivation is prohibited and illegal in Wyoming. In fact, Wyoming has some of the strictest marijuana laws in the nation depending on the amount of marijuana the person is found with and how many times they have been arrested prior for the same thing. For example, a person caught with 3 ounces or less of marijuana faces a misdemeanor with jail time up to a year and a fine of $1,000. However, a third conviction can quickly turn into a five-year prison sentence with a $5,000 fine.

Also, if you are caught selling marijuana, you can face up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. These consequences can quickly double if the offense or sale is relating to a minor or near a drug-free zone, like a public or private school.

In the state of Wyoming, medical marijuana is prohibited, however, the law does allow the use of CBD oil to treat patients with seizures, but in the same token, provides no legal means on in-state access. Three bills were considered in 2017 to expand this very limited protection, but as of now, none have moved forward.

Drug detection in hair

Drugs or their metabolites may be detectable in hair. Hair grows at a rate of approximately 1cm per month so depending on the length of hair it may be possible to determine drug use over recent months.

A urine drug test, also known as a urine drug screen or a UDS, is a painless test. It analyzes your urine for the presence of certain illegal drugs and prescription medications. The urine drug test usually screens for:

  • amphetamines
  • methamphetamines
  • benzodiazepines
  • barbiturates
  • marijuana
  • cocaine
  • PCP
  • methadone
  • opioids (narcotics)

Alcohol can also be included in screening tests, but it’s usually detected through breath tests rather than urine screens.

A urine drug test can help a doctor detect potential substance abuse problems. After a drug test identifies drugs you may be misusing, doctors can help you start a treatment plan. Taking urine drug tests throughout substance abuse treatment helps to ensure that the plan is working and that you’re no longer taking drugs.

Cannabis: 7-30 days in urine and up to 2 weeks in blood.

Cocaine: 3-4 days in urine and 1-2 days in blood.

Codeine: 1 day in urine and up to 12 hours in blood.

Heroin:3-4 days in urine and up to 12 hours in blood.

It is broken down and excreted through your urine, making it detectable with urine drug testing for up to five days. Hair drug testing timelines have windows of up to 90 days.

Negative results are usually received within 24 hours; however, a positive screen will require further testing that may take a few days up to one week. If the initial screen is negative, a medical review officer (MRO) will typically contact the employer with the results.

If your urine is being tested only for a urinalysis, you can eat and drink normally before the test. If you‘re having other tests at the same time, you may need to fast for a certain amount of time before the test.
